UBV polarimetry of 361 A- and F-type stars in selected areas We present simultaneous UBV linear polarization measurements for 361 A-and F-type stars with accurate colour excess and distance determination. These stars are distributed in 35 Kapteyn's Selected Areas, covering thethird and fourth quadrants of the galactic plane (|b| <= 30degr ).The obtained polarization and the known colour excess are compared. Ananalysis of the polarization distribution as a function of the stellardistance is also performed. Based on observations collected at theEuropean Southern Observatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile.

Colour excesses of F-G supergiants and Cepheids from Geneva photometry. A reddening scale for F-G supergiants and Cepheids is presented.Supergiants with low reddenings or in clusters form the basis of thecalibration. In this sense, it is entirely empirical. The data have beenobtained in the Geneva photometric system. Comparisons with otherreddening scales show no disagreement. The only problem is with Fernie'sscale for Cepheids (1990), where a systematic trend exists. Its originis not clear. It is suggested to extend the number of supergiants withindependently obtained colour excesses in order to test the existence ofa possible luminosity dependence of the calibration. A period-colourrelation for Cepheids is deduced, on the basis of the present reddeningcorrections. It gives strong support for V473 Lyr being a secondovertone pulsator.

The calibration of Stromgren photometry for A, F and early G supergiants. III - The A and early F supergiants This paper deals with the calibration of Stromgren photometry for the Aand early F supergiants. We derive a gravity parameter which can be usedto separate photometrically supergiants of different luminosity classes. It is used in conjunction to derive a simple calibration which gives theintrinsic color, of the supergiant. This calibration is tested andcompared with other reddening estimates for A and F supergiants in theliterature. Finally, we derive a semiempirical effective temperaturecalibration for the A and F supergiants.

Photometry of F-K type bright giants and supergiants. I - Intermediate band and H-Beta observations Over 1500 observations of 560 bright giants and supergiants of types F-Kare presented and compared to the observations by Gray and Olsen (1991).The present results include intermediate-band which is slightlydifferent from the Stromgren data by Gray and Olsen due to a differentwidth for the v filter. A systematic difference in m(1) - M(1) withdecreasing temperature is noted in the two H-Beta data sets, and thecorrelations are defined.

The calibration of the Stromgren photometric system for A, F and early G supergiants. I - The observational data An empirical calibration of the Stromgren uvby-beta photometric systemfor the A, F, and early G supergiants is being derived. This paperexplains the observational program and the photometric reductiontechniques used and presents a catalog of new Stromgren photometry forover 600 A, F, and G supergiants.

Four-colour UVBY and H-beta photometry of all A3 to F5 stars brighter than m(pg) = about 11.0 mag in 6 Selected Areas close to the Galactic plane Photometric observations of 540 A3-F5 stars in Selected Areas 171, 173,175, 177, 192, and 195 of the Potsdam survey (Becker and Brueck,1929-1938) are reported. Data obtained in the Stromgren uvby-beta systemusing a 6-channel spectrograph-photometer on the 50-cm Danish telescopeat ESO on 98 nights during 1986-1987 are presented in extensive tablesand graphs and briefly characterized. Comparisons with previousobservations of some program stars reveal no systematic differences inmagnitude or spectral indices.

Lists of photometric AM candidates The Geneva photometric m parameter (Nicolet and Cramer, 1982) is used inorder to select Am photometric candidates from the Rufener (1981)catalogue. Two lists are given, the first containing field stars and thesecond cluster stars. According to the photometric criteria thediffusion process probably responsible for the Am phenomenon takes placerather quickly as Am candidates are present in young clusters. It isconfirmed that the phenomenon is enhanced by low rotational velocity andhigh metallicity. The age seems to slightly affect the Am phenomenon.

Estimation of spectral classifications for bright southern stars with interesting Stromgren indices This paper investigates the degree of success with which uvby photometrycan be applied to predict spectral classifications for 947 A, F, and Gstars brighter than an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and with four-colorindices indicating some kind of interesting, unusual, or peculiarspectrum. One or several possible spectral classifications are estimatedfor each star from photometry alone, double stars are distinguished, andthe estimates are compared with published classifications. The resultsshow that the framework provided by uvby photometry can be extended toinclude most G and K stars, reddened stars, peculiar stars, and certaintypes of double star.
