A study of the interstellar gas between the sun and the Sagittarius arm The velocity field of the interstellar gas is examined in the 345-28 deggalactic longitude interval by means of Ca II K lines in high dispersionspectra. The radial velocities of the K lines are compared with 21-cmself-absorption velocities in both dark clouds (Knapp, 1972) and theextended feature mapped by Riegel and Crutcher (1972). Evidence ispresented to show that the extended +7 km/sec feature is more distantthan 500 pc. Two current hypotheses about the structure of the local gasnear the sun, one based upon a ring of expanding matter, the other beinga linear density-wave perturbation, are compared with the observations. The expanding ring model is in better agreement with the observed K-linevelocities.
