The structure of galactic disks. Studying late-type spiral galaxies using SDSS
Using imaging data from the SDSS survey, we present the g' and r' radialstellar light distribution of a complete sample of ~90 face-on tointermediate inclined, nearby, late-type (Sb-Sdm) spiral galaxies. Thesurface brightness profiles are reliable (1 σ uncertainty lessthan 0.2 mag) down to μ˜27 mag/''. Only ~10% of all galaxies havea normal/standard purely exponential disk down to our noise limit. Thesurface brightness distribution of the rest of the galaxies is betterdescribed as a broken exponential. About 60% of the galaxies have abreak in the exponential profile between ˜ 1.5-4.5 times thescalelength followed by a downbending, steeper outer region. Another~30% shows also a clear break between ˜ 4.0-6.0 times thescalelength but followed by an upbending, shallower outer region. A fewgalaxies have even a more complex surface brightness distribution. Theshape of the profiles correlates with Hubble type. Downbending breaksare more frequent in later Hubble types while the fraction of upbendingbreaks rises towards earlier types. No clear relation is found betweenthe environment, as characterised by the number of neighbours, and theshape of the profiles of the galaxies.

Cold dust and molecular gas towards the centers of Magellanic type galaxies and irregulars. I. The data
We present 1300 μm continuum emission measurements and observationsof the 12CO (1-0) and (2-1) transition towards the centers of64 Magellanic type galaxies (Sdm/Sm) and irregulars (Im/I0/Irr). Thesources are selected to have IRAS flux densities S100 μm≥1000 mJy and optical diameters mainly below 180 arcsec. We wereable to detect 12CO towards 41 and the continuum emissiontowards 28 galaxies. An H I/Optical Atlas of Isolated Galaxies
We present an H I and optical survey of 41 extremely isolated galaxiesin an attempt to search for the gaseous remnants of the galaxy formationprocess, predicted to exist by hierarchical models of galaxy formation.By observing extremely isolated, quiescent, nonpeculiar galaxies weminimize the chances that any extragalactic H I found will be anothergalaxy, tidal debris, or ejecta from a galactic fountain or superwind.We have obtained new and archival data from the VLA and ATCA in a searchfor H I clouds down to MHI~107 Msolararound these galaxies. We found 13 H I-rich companions around 10 of the41 galaxies surveyed. Optical imaging finds spatially coincident starsassociated with all 13 companions. We find that the isolated galaxieshave properties fairly similar to those of field galaxies, while thecompanions are similar to dwarf irregular galaxies. The presence ofstars in all 13 companions suggests that H I clouds without starsdiscovered by other authors around field galaxies are not primordial andmost likely have either a tidal or ejecta origin.

Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

Gas-Rich Companions of Isolated Galaxies
We have used the VLA to search for gaseous remnants of the galaxyformation process around six extremely isolated galaxies. We found twodistinct H I clouds around each of two galaxies in our sample (UGC 9762and UGC 11124). These clouds are rotating and appear to have opticalcounterparts, strongly implying that they are typical dwarf galaxies.The companions are currently weakly interacting with the primary galaxybut look to be in stable orbits as they have dynamical frictiontimescales of 5-100 Gyr. In one case, (UGC 11124N), we see ongoingaccretion of the companion onto the primary galaxy. The small mass ratioinvolved in this interaction means that the resulting merger will be aminor one. The companion does, however, contain enough gas that themerger will represent a significant infusion of fuel to drive futurestar formation in UGC 11124 while building up the mass of the disk.

Catalogue of HI maps of galaxies. I.
A catalogue is presented of galaxies having large-scale observations inthe HI line. This catalogue collects from the literature the informationthat characterizes the observations in the 21-cm line and the way thatthese data were presented by means of maps, graphics and tables, forshowing the distribution and kinematics of the gas. It containsfurthermore a measure of the HI extension that is detected at the levelof the maximum sensitivity reached in the observations. This catalogueis intended as a guide for references on the HI maps published in theliterature from 1953 to 1995 and is the basis for the analysis of thedata presented in Paper II. An image database. II. Catalogue between δ=-30deg and δ=70deg.
A preliminary list of 68.040 galaxies was built from extraction of35.841 digitized images of the Palomar Sky Survey (Paper I). For eachgalaxy, the basic parameters are obtained: coordinates, diameter, axisratio, total magnitude, position angle. On this preliminary list, weapply severe selection rules to get a catalog of 28.000 galaxies, wellidentified and well documented. For each parameter, a comparison is madewith standard measurements. The accuracy of the raw photometricparameters is quite good despite of the simplicity of the method.Without any local correction, the standard error on the total magnitudeis about 0.5 magnitude up to a total magnitude of B_T_=17. Significantsecondary effects are detected concerning the magnitudes: distance toplate center effect and air-mass effect.

A very large array survey of neutral hydrogen in Virgo Cluster spirals. 3: Surface density profiles of the gas
In this paper we analyze the radial profiles of the neutral hydrogensurface density distribution of 17 bright spirals in the Virgo Cluster.The profiles were derived from images, which were obtained with the VeryLarge Array (VLA) and which have been presented in a previous paper(Cayatte et al., (1990)). Although the sample is still small, we can forthe first time show, that different galaxies are affected differently bythe cluster environment. We make a quantitative estimate of theimportance of the different gas removal mechanisms for selectedindividual galaxies and compare these estimates with the observed H Imorphology. In some galaxies ram-pressure stripping has done seriousdamage to the H I disks, while in other galaxies turbulent viscousstripping and thermal conductivity have caused a mild, but global H Ideficiency across the entire disk. For our analysis we divide thegalaxies into three groups according to the ration of H I to opticaldiameter, a fourth group contains the anemic galaxies. As it turns out aclassification according to relative H I diameter helps to elucidatewhich gas removal processes play a role. Galaxies in different groupshave many other properties in common, most importantly the projecteddistance from the cluster center. A comparison of the radial H I surfacedensity profiles with those of field spirals of the same morphologicaltype shows, that spirals in different groups are affected verydifferently by the environment. Galaxies with the smallest H I sizeshave normal central surface densities and we suggest that these are thegalaxies that are currently undergoing ram-pressure sweeping. Thegalaxies with only slightly smaller than usual H I diameters have adepressed H I surface density across the entire face of the galaxy. Thisis quite likely due to viscous stripping. One group is only very mildlyaffected, this could be caused by gravitational effects due to distantencounters.

Global properties of dwarf galaxies. I. Galaxy sample and IRAS infrared flux-densities
We have selected a sample of 278 dwarf galaxies for which at least Bmagnitudes and preferably also optical colour information are available.For those galaxies that have no previously published IRAS fluxes, wehave used the IRAS database to extract fluxes or upper limits tosensitivity levels significantly better than those of the IRAS PointSource Catalog. New IRAS data include 79 galaxies detected in at leastone band, and 66 galaxies with good upper limits. In total, about 60% ofall dwarf galaxies in the sample now have been detected at 60/100μm.

Global properties of dwarf galaxies II. Colours and luminosities
We have used a previously determined sample of 278 dwarf galaxies formost of which B magnitudes, optical colours, HI fluxes and IRASflux-densities are known, in order to derive luminosities, colours andsurface brightnesses. Dwarf galaxy properties are compared to those of acontrol sample of 228 larger spiral galaxies. The dwarf galaxies have onaverage higher 60/100μm flux ratios and lower 12/25μm flux ratiosthan the spiral galaxies, indicating that the contribution of `cirrus'to the infrared emission from dwarf galaxies is relativelyinsignificant. In the dwarf galaxies, the 60/100μm flux ratioincreases with increasing optical blueness; spiral galaxies show theopposite. Dwarf galaxies with a low optical surface brightness have low100μm/HI ratios, but the converse is not true. Galaxies with high100μm/HI ratios (indicative of high dust-to-gas ratios) also havehigh FIR/B ratios as well as high 60/100μm flux-density ratios.Although this is true for both spiral and dwarf galaxies, at given100μm/HI ratios the dwarf galaxies have both a lower FIR/B ratio anda higher 60/100μm flux-density ratio. This result is of importance inthe interpretation of FIR/B - 60/100μm diagrams in terms of starformation activity.

The far-infrared properties of the CfA galaxy sample. I - The catalog
IRAS flux densities are presented for all galaxies in the Center forAstrophysics magnitude-limited sample (mB not greater than 14.5)detected in the IRAS Faint Source Survey (FSS), a total of 1544galaxies. The detection rate in the FSS is slightly larger than in thePSC for the long-wavelength 60- and 100-micron bands, but improves by afactor of about 3 or more for the short wavelength 12- and 25-micronbands. This optically selected sample consists of galaxies which are, onaverage, much less IR-active than galaxies in IR-selected samples. Itpossesses accurate and complete redshift, morphological, and magnitudeinformation, along with observations at other wavelengths.

The H I properties of spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. IV - Westerbork observations of 12 field galaxies
One-dimensional H I observations of 12 spiral galaxies in a lowgalaxy-density environment have been obtained with the WesterborkSynthesis Radio Telescope. A position-velocity diagram, the H Idistribution projected upon the resolution axis of the observation, theH I global profile, and the distribution of the H I surface density aregiven for each galaxy. Most of the galaxies are found to possesssymmetrical H I distributions. For the case of UGC 7941, the H I isshown to be more asymmetrically distributed than in the average fieldgalaxy. An extended distribution of H I gas is noted in NGC 2654.

A survey of galaxy redshifts. IV - The data
The complete list of the best available radial velocities for the 2401galaxies in the merged Zwicky-Nilson catalog brighter than 14.5mz and with b (II) above +40 deg or below -30 deg ispresented. Almost 60 percent of the redshifts are from the CfA surveyand are accurate to typically 35 km/s.

Flocculent and grand design spiral structure in field, binary and group galaxies
A 12-division morphological system emphasizing arm continuity, lengthand symmetry has been developed for the classification of all spiralgalaxies according to the regularity of their spiral arm structure. Armclassifications were tabulated for 305 barred and nonbarred spiralgalaxies; of these, 79 are isolated, 52 are binary and 174 are ingroups. Among the isolated SA galaxies, 68 + or - 10% have irregular andfragmented, or 'flocculent', spiral structures. Only 32 + or - 10% havesymmetric spiral arms in the classic grand design pattern. Flocculentspirals are the most common structures of galaxies without companions orbars. Since flocculent galaxies may have bars and companions, and granddesign galaxies may have neither bars nor companions, such perturbationsare neither perfectly effective nor always necessary in the driving ofgrand design patterns.

A new classification system for galaxies
A galaxy classification system is proposed in which normal spirals andlenticulars form parallel sequences within which 'early' and 'late'systems are distinguished by means of their disk-to-bulge ratios. Asequence of 'anemic spirals', which occur most frequently in richclusters, is found to have characteristics that are intermediate betweenthose of vigorous gas-rich normal spirals and gas-poor systems of typeS0. The differences between normal spirals (Sa-Sb-Sc), anemic spirals(Aa-Ab-Ac), and lenticulars (S0a-S0b-S0c) are tentatively interpreted interms of the influence of environment on the evolution of flattenedgalaxies.
